Briljant! Dutch newly-rated managers revealed

This month's Citywire Global Dutch ratings feature 17 debutants, the most of any European markets we currently track.

One of the leading entrants is James Rutherford of Hermes Investment Management who is lead manager on its Hermes Sourcecap European Alpha GBP fund.

Since the fund’s launch in January 2010, it has returned 39.88% to its investors, which is more than double its benchmark, the FTSE All-World Europe Index, which rose 15.54% over the same period.

Rutherford’s outperformance appears to have been driven by his strong investment in Scandinavian companies, with Swedbank, Elekta and Novo Nordisk all forming part of his top 10 holdings.

Overall his risk-adjusted outperformance has led him to a AA rating, narrowly missing out on a AAA rating.

Other debutants this month include Brazilian equities managerRogerio Poppee from Newton Investment Management and JP Morgan duo Hugo Alexander and Lisa Coleman.

Alexander is a global equity specialist, while Coleman focuses on European corporate bonds. All three managers enter the ratings with an A rating.

Meanwhile, Mihail Dobrinov has re-emerged in the ratings with an A rating this month after a four-year hiatus. Dobrinov is the lead manager on the Principal GI Emerging Market Equity fund.

In the past three years Dobrinov has been able to outdo the market by posting a return of 42.33% while the MSCI EM (Emerging Markets) Index rose 40.80%.

Dutch equity managers Willem F Burgers and Hilco T Wiersma are among the managers to have gained their first AAA ratings this month.

The duo co-manages the Add Value Fund, which has returned 64.58% to its investors over the last three years. This is well ahead of the MSCI Netherlands Small Cap index which rose 19.03% in the same time frame.

Such strong risk-adjusted outperformance has led them to their first ever AAA rating and makes them the only Dutch equity managers to currently hold Citywire’s top rating.

A quick look at the group stakes shows JP Morgan leading with 23 rated managers. This is while Fidelity and Schroders lie second and third respectively with 18 and 15 rated managers each.

In total 323 managers received a rating in the Netherlands this month. There are 46 AAA, 89 AA and 188 A rated managers. We currently track 1,916 managers running 2,229 funds of which 1,391 have the necessary track record to warrant inclusion in our ratings.
